HOW OUR FARM WAS NAMED . . .

We are named Morning Owl Farm because soon after Mary moved to this land (and it began caring for her) she found an adolescent female Great Horned Owl had also taken up residency. At first, it seemed the bird was sick, but those who knew more about owls said she was simply staking out her territory after having been sent into adulthood by her parents. The owl was eventually named, L'uccello (meaning the bird in Italian). Nearly ten years later, Lu remains at Morning Owl Farm. How do we know it's really Lu? Lu, like all owls, has her own distinctive voice and Lu's is the most lovely of all.  Five deep and slow hoots somewhere in the range of Mahalia Jackson.

So, that explains the owl part, but why morning? Some are night owls, others aren't. Mary is a morning owl, and it's then that she gets to visit with Lu, who can be spotted most mornings, except when she's on her nest. Every morning when Mary sees Lu, she waves and says, "Good morning, Owl!"  So far, Lu's never really answered back, but it feels like she agrees mornings are best.
